TORONTO, ON –(October 7, 2016) - Self Care Catalysts – a patient intelligence and solutions company – announces its newest addition to the Health Storylines™ group of mobile self-care apps. The Toronto-based healthtech company has an extensive background in research involving people living with HIV, and has recently partnered with the Positive Living Society of British Columbia to launch Positive Living Storylines. The app is developed to empower and support individuals diagnosed with HIV with a customizable suite of self-care tools that allows them to manage a range of chronic health conditions associated with long-term HIV management.

Although a cure for HIV does not currently exist, an early diagnosis, modern antiretroviral treatments, and a commitment to self-management can enable someone living with HIV to maintain a normal and healthy lifestyle. Patient and physician research conducted by Self Care Catalysts reveals that people with HIV are faced with the concerns of living well with what is now a chronic disease. A growing range of chronic health conditions need to be managed alongside their therapy for HIV as people age and live longer with it.

“HIV isn’t a death sentence anymore. More accurately, HIV is a life sentence,” explains Neil Self, Chair of Positive Living BC and a person living with HIV for over twenty years. “Surviving the disease means managing a myriad of complementary health, wellness and social concerns on top of complicated pharmaceutical treatments. Positive Living BC aims to support healthy outcomes among people living with HIV, and we believe the Positive Living Storylines app is an innovative means to that end.”

The Positive Living Storylines self-care app was designed to support long term health among the HIV community. The app has a suite of self-care tools designed for managing HIV and other co-morbid health conditions. It allows users to engage with meaningful content around HIV management, and provides the tools needed to track and visualize patterns around their overall health. On top of their daily tracking, the Positive Living Storylines mobile app allows patients to sync with other health apps and devices such as Fitbit® and Jawbone®. The app creates a summary of the user’s health on a feature called “My Storylines”, which helps to facilitate more informed conversations with the healthcare team. The app will also be used for community-based research through the collection of aggregated patient reported outcomes that are de-identified and anonymized.

“With the advances in HIV treatment, we now need to shift our focus from simply HIV-management, to long-term health management,” says Grace Soyao, Founder and CEO of Self Care Catalysts. “Our Health Storylines™ app platform is a fitting solution for this population as it allows users to decide on what is the best way to carry out their own self-care, regardless of what health conditions they have. At the same time, we are able to collect real world insights to help the healthcare community provide more relevant care for persons with living with HIV.”
